All stored somewhere “safe” behind a login, inside a walled garden, on someone else’s machine. But here’s the unspoken truth: the more convenient it gets, the less it belongs to you.

You already feel it.
You forgot a password and lost access to a decade of memories.
You posted something “off-brand” and your reach vanished.
You backed up your life to Google Drive and handed them a mirror of your brain.

The Price of Convenience Is Profiled Control

Let’s name what’s really going on.

Big Tech doesn’t just want your data.
It wants ownership of your behavior.

Self host these instead:

Notes: Run Nextcloud Notes or Joplin Server on your own machine. Sync over LAN or via secure remote.
Password manager: Vaultwarden instead of Bitwarden cloud. You host it, you control the keys.
Calendar & Contacts — CalDAV/CardDAV on Nextcloud. No Google snooping your schedule.
Files: Sync with Syncthing or Nextcloud instead of Drive or Dropbox.
RSS Reader: Miniflux or FreshRSS. Own your feed, stop being fed.

You don’t need to do it all.
But every service you take back is one less profile they can build.

You’ll Hear Pushback. Ignore It
They’ll say:

“Self-hosting is too complicated.”
“You’ll screw it up and lose data.”
“You’re being paranoid.”

So what.

Learning takes effort. Privacy takes effort.
You’ll make mistakes but they’ll be your mistakes. Not ones engineered into the platform to extract you.

Don’t wait until you’re locked out to care about owning your digital life.

Tools Aren’t the Endgame
